Department of Transportation Physical

A Department of Transportation physical exam is required for any driver who operates a commercial motor vehicle (CMV). The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration requires that the CMV drivers are physically and mentally fit. This is done in order to ensure the safety of all drivers who share the road.

What to expect at your DOT physical exam

During your visit the medical examiner will review your medical history and medications.

There are 4 major components to the DOT exam which include:

  1. Vision exam

  2. Hearing exam

  3. Urine testing (not drug testing)

  4. Physical exam including blood pressure

Once your exam is done, your results will be reported electronically to the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (NRCME). Drivers who receive certification will be given a copy of the Medical Examiner's Certificate.

 

What to bring to your appointment? 

Please bring the following items to your initial appointment:

  • Valid driver's license

  • List of current medications

  • Corrective vision lenses (if necessary)

  • Hearing aids (if necessary)

  • Fill out Section 1 of the Medical Exam Report Form and bring it with you

What is the cost to complete the DOT exam?

The cost for the DOT Physical exam is $100, pass or fail.
